Once again Rhode Island Wing is pleased to announce a Cadet Firearms Training Day on Saturday, Oct 25, at the Smithfield Sportsman’s Club (SSC). SSC is supplying the club house, indoor range, .22 target rifles and personnel for this event. Please download all 3 attached documents. The letter provides all of the details for this event. Key highlights are below. Copies of the documents are in RIW Teams | General | CadetFirearms. To apply for this activity, print the attached forms (CAPF 60-81 and SSC Release) and have them signed by your parents and squadron commander. Deliver the completed/signed forms (CAP 60-81and SSC Release) to LtCol Bell. Completed forms may be emailed to jbell(a)riwg.cap.gov<mailto:jbell@riwg.cap.gov> or hand carried to Wing Hq or West Bay squadron. Slots will be filled on a first come, first registered basis with the deadline for completed paperwork of Oct 17, 2025. Commanders will be notified weekly of approved applications. Dear Rhode Island Wing Members, On Saturday, 27 September 2025, Rhode Island Wing will be participating in a Disaster Relief Exercise in conjunction with the Portsmouth Emergency Management Agency. Exercise Details: * Time: 0800–1200 (exercise); additional training until 1700 * Location: Portsmouth, RI (departing from Wing HQ at 0700; meet at 0630) * Focus: Using drones to assess the condition of dams in the area * Additional Training (afternoon): * Drone operations * ELT search techniques * Radio communications This will be an excellent opportunity for members pursuing or practicing qualifications as: * Mission Radio Operators (MRO) * Communications Unit Leaders (CUL) * Mission Staff Assistants (MSA) * Urban Direction Finding (UDF) Requirements: * Current General Emergency Services (GES) qualification * Bring a printed copy of your SQTR(s) for the positions you are working on Why Participate? * Hands-on practice in a real-world exercise environment * Showcase Civil Air Patrol’s capabilities to community partners * Work directly with Emergency Management professionals * Gain valuable training hours toward qualifications If you would like to attend, please reply to this email so we can compile the participant roster. RIWG is working with Portsmouth EMA on a drone exercise for Saturday 27 September. I'm working on getting some drone check pilots to Portsmouth to conduct drone pilot training and checkouts if you are qualified and able to fly a drone reasonably well. CAP drones fly like most other quad copters. You must have an FAA remote pilot's certificate (Part 107) and be current—remember there is a required test every two years. I need a list of those wanting to participate by 2100 Thursday, so MA can plan on how many mission pilots to bring. The message claims your tax refund has been approved and instructs you to select a link to enter your payment information. There is a very strict deadline, and the instructions state that you will lose your tax refund if you do not enter your payment information quickly. However, this message is a smishing, or text phishing, scam sent by cybercriminals. The link doesn’t take you to the official FTB website. Instead, it leads to a fake webpage designed to look real. If you enter your personal details or banking information on this page, the scammers will steal it! Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to this smishing scam: * Be suspicious of any text message that claims to be from a government agency like the IRS or a state tax board. These agencies will not contact you by text to ask for your personal or financial information. * Never select links in unexpected text messages. If you need to check on the status of a tax refund, go to the official tax agency's website directly by typing the address into your browser. * While this scam targets taxpayers in California, watch out for messages that create a sense of urgency or use threats. Mission Scanner and/or Mission Observer opportunities

RIWG has a mission scheduled for Tuesday which will visit every public use airport in the state. Looking for MS or MO qualified or trainees who can spend a half day flying around the state. To be an aircrew member you must be 18 or older. Please respond to me if you want to fly Tuesday. RIWG will be taking receipt of a new C182 this week. There are missions available for training. All aircrew need to become familiar with the operation of our new airplane. Please respond with your availability for training.
